Some class members created stars, some diamonds. Me and two other classmates, had decided to use the moon as our shape. We wanted to make the poem rhyme also and we wrote a poem based on the moon. Working in a group, collaboratively, this is what we came up with. Bare in mind we wrote it in less than 15 minutes.

North Cyprus

North Cyprus

Photo

Photo

Evaluation

This observation shows that Child.M is engaging in constructive and small world play. I have seen that this form of play is of interest to Child.M. He enjoys building and connecting objects to form a trail. Child.M recognises when he requires support and communicates through his body language and gestures in order to get his point across. He also recognises that there are not enough tracks to play with in order to build his track. Child.M has some good fine manipulative skills and hand-eye co-ordination however requires extra support in this. Child.M also has some sense of inclusion amongst his peers as he shares the equipment with others. Child.M shows signs of frustration and seems to be unable to complete his play experience, therefore he requires extra support in recognising his own achievements.

Child Observation

Child’s Name: Child.M

Date: 15/03/12

Time: 2.49 pm - 2.55 pm

Context: Indoors, 1 child present, 1 Adult (interaction)

Narrative Observation

Child.M plays with a train set (a few tracks). He passes me a train.

“Thank You (Child.M)” I drive it along the three blocks

Child.M: “No, this one” and points to the small tracks. He sits down beside me and plays with the three pieces.

Child.M: “Phew!” and strokes his forehead. He drops some pieces on the floor, “Whoops” and he smiles.

He continues attempting to piece together some train tracks. After a failed attempt, he sighs and places the piece in front of another child, then gestures with his finger to the tracks.

The Child connects the blocks to the other pieces and smiles.

Child.M continues driving the train along three tracks.

(After a while)

He sees a broken piece and says “Huh?” then mumbles (unable to identify spoken language)

He attempts to connect one more piece onto his track. It does not connect. He stands up and looks around…

“No more”

Adult: “No more what (child.M)?”

Child.M points to the train track pieces. Child.M sighs and walks away

Teachers in Tiaras: Facebook

Teachers in Tiaras: Facebook:
teachersintiaras:

She had the children take a piece of paper and told them to crumple it up, stomp on it and really mess it up but do not rip it. Then she had them unfold the paper, smooth it out and look at how scarred and dirty is was. She then told them to tell it they’re sorry. Now even though they said ...they were sorry and tried to fix the paper, she pointed out all the scars they left behind. And that those scars will never go away no matter how hard they tried to fix it. That is what happens when a child bullies another child, they may say they’re sorry but the scars are there forever. The looks on the faces of the children in the classroom told her the message hit home. Pass it on.

to-her-darkness:

There are tons of websites and prompts to make a “Facebook” on anyone! I created this one on my favorite author.

Have your students create a Facebook full of friends, statuses, and wall updates on characters as an alternative book report.

Children are aged: 3 - 4 Years

Teacher: My mother was very old, and then she eventually passed away. I do miss her but she is in a peaceful, better place.

Child.1: Why did she die?

Teacher: She was very sick

Child.2: Did the monster eat her?

The question of child.2 was the highlight of my day. It amazed me how children can get so wrapped up in fantasy and the stories that they read. Has anyone got any other stories to share about surprising questions that children ask? If so, please feel free to share it.

ursoteachable:

Parking-Garage Sight Word Study: This is a really fun way to assess sight word retention. Each student gets a parking garage paper. The words inside the parking spots should be different and vary per-child. Each student gets a matchbox car. Say a word on the list of sight words and have students place their car on the correct word. If you are smarter than me, laminate the parking sheets!!! :-)

Remember this:
One day you will be sick.”

-
— Poem written by an 11 year old Afghan girl

This poem was recorded in a NYT magazine article about female underground poetry groups in Afghanistan. An amazing article about the ways in which women are using a traditional two line poetry form to express their resistance to male oppression, their feelings about love (considered blasphemous), and their doubts about religion.

One of the best articles I’ve read all year. Here’s the link

I’ve found that the best way to spot plagiarism is to have your students write often and know their writing styles and abilities. I can easily spot plagiarism because I know my students well. I then check the passage or passages with any number of free plagiarism checkers online and also Google search sections that seem particularly suspicious!

The best deterrent for all of this is to teach students about plagiarism at the beginning of the year and show them how you are going to check over their work and how they can check their own work before submitting!

Oh…and here is an article with some more plagiarism checker options and thoughts!
